Chapter Nine

I stood on the rooftop of the tavern, listening to the sound of the ocean and the laughter of the man I had to assume belonged to the face flashing on my locket.

I squatted and listened as he joked with the women in the room with him.

“Don't do this.”

My back stiffened at the sound of Maddox’s voice. I ignored him, but he came and sat beside me, bringing his warmth with him. “I love you and I will stand with you and fight with you and die with you, if need be.”

I laughed silently as my eyes burned, threatening tears. “I don't want to hear it,” I muttered, still trying to focus on the man below. Of course he would declare his love for me on the eve of the day I had finally agreed there would never be love for me.

“Love me again. Love me and give me a chance.” He spun me around, forcing me to look into his dark-blue eyes. “Love me again.”

I shook my head. “I don't want to love anything, Max. I just want to kill.”

“Then let me love you.” He pulled me in, pressing his lips against mine, but I didn't return the kiss. He was forcing it, to try to save my heart from breaking. But there was no fixing what was already broken. I sagged in his grip, letting him assault me. He opened his eyes, passionately searching mine for something. “Don't do this. Don't become this person. I was wrong. I have been wrong for a long time. Don't do this.”

I shook my head. “It doesn't matter anymore. I am meant to suffer to heal the world. I have come to terms with this. You should too.”

He clenched his jaw. “I refuse to believe that this is the plan for you.”

I shrugged. “Then don't.” I turned, jerking free of his grip and listened for the laugh of the man below.

His face flashed again just as Maddox grabbed the locket, whispering harshly, “This is enough, Amillia! You will remember you are the queen to all the lands! You are the one who will rule all of this land! Each citizen is a piece of the puzzle, a chink in the chain! You will respect that position and protect them! I know Master Lindley taught you that!”

I shoved him, snatching the locket back. “You don't get to tell me what to do. I know my role.” I got up and hurried along the roof, hopping down below onto a balcony. I dragged a sword from my hilt quietly as I climbed inside, pulling my mask down with my other hand. A group of women, who looked like the servant girls in the queen regent’s palace, glanced up at me. They opened their mouths to scream, but I pointed at the door to the room. “You are free to go. I will not harm you.”

Each clamped their mouth shut and hurried from the room, doing the odd tiptoe. The man walked from the bathroom, a large sheet around his heavy middle was all he wore.
